Protect Mothers & Newborns
Guatemala
For women in the remote Western Highlands of Guatemala, reaching maternal healthcare can mean traveling hours over mountainous roads, often without reliable transportation or the resources needed to access timely, safe care. As a result, Indigenous women in Guatemala face significantly higher risks during pregnancy and childbirth and are three times as likely to die from pregnancy and birth-related complications.
For more than 25 years, Global Communities' Casa Materna has provided a safe place for expectant and postpartum mothers to stay near skilled care before and after childbirth. Casa Materna offers prenatal and postpartum services, gynecological care, nutrition support, and referrals to emergency medical care when needed. The program also works hand in hand with local Mayan midwives, known as comadronas, and Indigenous health professionals to ensure care is culturally respectful and trusted by the families it serves.
Since opening its doors, Casa Materna has helped more than 125,000 women access essential maternal healthcare and contributed to tens of thousands of safer deliveries. Most remarkably, we are proud to say that we have never lost a mother receiving care at the facility.
